Choosing the right surgeon

What are the essential credentials of a well-qualified cosmetic surgeon?

A qualified surgeon should hold the specific British FRCS qualification and be registered with the GMC (General Medical Council). Other qualifications, such as FRCS (Plast) - which is specific to cosmetic surgery - and the European qualification EBOPRAS, all provide the credentials of a well-qualified cosmetic surgeon.

How do I check that my chosen surgeon has the qualifications and background they should have?

Don't be afraid to discuss with your surgeon during consultation. If they practice in major private hospitals and the National Health Service, you will know they have been through the most rigorous checks. You can also check on the GMC specialist register.

What is the GMC specialist register, and why is this important?

The GMC (General Medical Council) has been established by the government and has strong and effective legal powers designed to maintain high standards the patient expects from doctors. Their legal authority is the Medical Act, which gives the GMC powers to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public.

The consultation

You will meet your consultant during your first outpatient visit. During this time you will be to discuss your requirements and what results you would like to achieve. Your consultant will be attentive to your wishes and will establish a treatment plan. There will be an examination and an explanation of the various procedures that are appropriate. You will also be advised about any risks that are inherent in any procedure. Your post-operative recovery will be explained and you will be told how much time you will need before you can resume work.

The consultation is an opportunity to develop a trusting relationship with your consultant. Should you forget to ask a particular question during your outpatient visit, the hospitals at which Regency Oak consult have specialist nurses available to answer any further questions. Alternatively, further time can be set aside with your consultant.

During your visit you are welcome to tour the hospital and discuss the arragements for your treatment. We appreciate that you may have to juggle many aspects of your life and we aim to make things as flexible and convenient as possible for you.

Regency Oak follows national guidelines associated with cosmetic surgery. One feature of these is a two-week cooling-off period from the date of your first outpatient visit. This has been established to protect you, the patient, from rushing into any form of treatment without having enough time to fully digest all the information presented to you.

Contact

Feel free to talk to one of our advisers, who can make an appointment for a consultation for you. Alternatively, we can arrange for you to have an informal look around the hospital.
